Energy Efficiency

Lamp Phase Out

Because of escalating climate change and energy use concerns, governments around the world are starting to get rid of highly inefficient incandescent lamps.

The phase-out of incandescent lighting in the UK will commence on September 1st this year.

Making lighting more energy efficient is a crucial component of the fight against increasingly severe climate change and the aim of the incandescent lamp (mostly GLS) phase-out is to force greater use of better alternatives.

Investigations by lighting industry associations (such as CELMA) show that in Europe, 60 per cent of today’s lighting installations are inefficient and that 75 per cent of office and industrial installations are still fitted with conventional luminaries.

The main part of the phase-out begins from September 2009, with restrictions on selling GLS, frosted incandescent and non-clear halogen lamps of 100W and above. From that date, manufactures cannot legally produce or sell such lamps and wholesalers can only fulfil existing orders until stocks run out. Every year more lamps such as Dicroic, metal halide, son-t and halogen will be phased out until 2016, when only a very few highly specialised types will remain.
